Minutes of the meeting of October 19, 2010

 

President Brouady opened the meeting at 7:53 with 27 in attendance.

 

Treasurer Peter Lenk reported a positive balance.

 

The minutes of the meeting of October 5, 2010 were accepted.

 

WALPEX 2010: Every thing is in order; volunteers are needed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, just show up.

Jack Miller noted that all exhibit space is filled up.

 

Guests: Steven Tauber introduced his friend, John Rodakis, a collector of US and US covers, who once worked at Nassau Street.

 

A second reading was made for Joe Sygnod and he was welcomed into membership.

 

Bourse Notes

     Bourse Manager James Hencke presented several accumulated earnings to members from the sales of stamps from their bourse books.

 

Museum News

     Saturday October 30 – Halloween Family Day

     Saturday November 6 – Children’s Story Hour

 

New Business

     Len Andexler called attention to the Chelmsford Club’s November 1 meeting which features a talk on the IRS program that affects small non-profits such as stamp clubs.

 

Next meeting – A club auction.

 

The meeting closed at 8:15 and was followed by Charlie Hass talk on expertizing. He noted that he started collecting stamps at age 8 and has published a book on Arab world stamps. He said that knowledge is the key to expertizing. He then discussed printing of stamps noting the many ways plates are prepared, including: type setting, photo engraving, electrotyping, and others. He talked about overprinting and showed full sheet examples of what can happen during the printing process including: double printing, double images, inking problems, and inverts. He received wide applause for his informative talk.
