The meeting
closed at 8:29 and was followed by Mark Butterline’s
talk entitled “Sex, Violence and Breadfruit”, a brief history of Pitcairn
Island. It was first occupied by Polynesians who then left. It was one of the
places where the British Navy searched for breadfruit. It was made famous by mutineers from the Bounty
who settled there often with lawless violence, and at times with removal to
Tahiti and back. The book and movie” Mutiny on the Bounty” brought visitors to
the island. Today about 50 people are residents on the island and a number of men are being tried for sex crimes. The talk was illustrated
with images of stamps depicting events on the island. It was a very well
presented story and was appreciated by all in attendance.
