WALTHAM STAMP CLUB

Minutes of the meeting of April 5, 2008

This meeting was a Saturday morning meeting and was opened at 10:12 by President Shufrin. The 29 assembled members enjoyed a spread of delicious goodies which put them all in a good mood.

The Treasurer being absent there was no Treasurer’s report.

The minutes of the meeting of March 18, 2008 were approved with one minor correction.

The President expressed his dismay at the change in date for the Megashow which places it in direct conflict with the scheduled date for WALPEX 2008. It appears that the date for WALPEX will have to be changed.

A second reading was made for applicant Jim Reynolds and he is now a member.

The Club has received an unsolicited payment of dues from a non member. The Executive Committee will decide how to handle this although several members urged that the check be cashed.

Old Business

A theme is needed for WALPEX.  Steve Tauber suggested that it could be an anniversary of the Washington-Franklin series.

The Audit Committee is scheduled to audit the Treasurer’s accounts.

President Shufrin is seeking additions to his list of philatelic web sites.

The Museum has reported record attendance in recent months.

New Business

Jack Miller asked for volunteers to help at the Federation Show offering free admission to the Show for volunteers. The Show theme is the 100 year anniversary of the Model T and there will be a number of Model T’s there and there may be a parade of them. In addition the Show celebrates the 100 year anniversary of Mothers’ Day.

Bourse Manager James Hencke will be attending a meeting of such managers at the Show.

The next meeting will be workshop on buying and selling via StampWants.Com

The June 3rd meeting will feature a talk by a professional auctioneer revealing the details of how auctions are done.

The meeting closed at 10:55 and was followed by the continuation of the excellent DVD documentary on Holocaust mail prepared by the Philatelic Foundation. As an introduction to the subject Museum Curator, George Norton, showed several frames of material from the museum relating to underground mail that Polish prisoners had managed to make despite the very harsh conditions imposed by the Nazis.  The material shown is very rare and very valuable and for the most part shows stamps manufactured clandestinely.

The DVD showed cards and letters from concentration, slave labor, and death camps and again showed the scourge of Nazi inhumanity. In the later part cards and letters reflected post war attempts to reunite survivors and to learn the fate of others.
