The meeting closed at 8:26 and was preceded by a vigorous session of applying stamps to 2000   WALPEX cards. It was followed by a talk by former Waltham Stamp Club President Jeff Shapiro. Jeff’s talk was on aerophilately and concentrated on the period of 1933-1941, the period of the flying clipper ships. The clipper ships were the result of the efforts of Juan Trippe, an aviation visionary, who thought that luxurious accommodations and exotic destinations would attract a rich clientelel. His expectations were not met and he turned to air mail as a use for his clippers and he was successful. The air mail stamps, C20, C21, and C22, were one result of his efforts. Jeff showed a number of covers of this period with some quite unusual markings including ones where the longest path was used to get to a destination because of war in Europe. The service ended after December 7, 1941 and by a year later all five clippers had been destroyed.
